57 Lance Corporal Robert William Graham - Bairnsdale
Killed in Action 2 May 1915
….. killed at Gaba Tepe
Lance Corporal Robert Graham and his brother Norman were the sons of
the local Police Inspector and spent part of their childhood going to school
at 754 Bairnsdale. They enlisted together on 23 August 1914. Robert, 26,
was the elder of the boys and he joined the 9
th
Battalion, while Norman, at
20 years, joined the Service Corps. After training they both left for Egypt
and Robert was sent to the front.
He survived the landing but was killed in action at Gaba Tepe and is
remembered at the Lone Pine memorial in Turkey and on the roll of honour
at his old school. Norman returned home in 1916 after contracting
tuberculosis and served in the Service Corps at the end of the war.
