1767 Private Claude Beresford James – Bruthen
Killed in Action 16 August 1915

Claude and his brother Cyril were both born in Kerang and after the death of
their parents they came to Bruthen and worked as farm labourers in the
district, both boarding with Mrs Reid at Bruthen. Claude enlisted at Bruthen
on 18 December 1914 and embarked with the 14
th
Battalion at the end of the
following March and was part of the Gallipoli advance.
He was reported killed in action by the Major of the 4
th
Infantry Brigade
on 20 August. Like many others his body was not recovered and his name
was placed on the memorials at Lone Pine and Bruthen. His younger brother
Cyril enlisted and served in WW2.
